Is the Covid-19 delirium setting in for you? Maybe it’s because you’re naturally a social butterfly or maybe because you’ve recently lost your job. As a recent addition to the work from home crew, these are a few tactics I have used to transition into this new world. If you too are fighting to stay focused working or studying at home, these tips may help you out.
1. Keep a routine
If you’re struggling with focusing, setting and going by a daily routine may help. By getting in a pattern of when you wake up, how you get ready for work and when you start working, you’ll be able to better mentally prepare for the day. You’ll also be more rested (since you won’t be staying up until ungodly hours binging Friends) and your body and mind will get more accustomed to your new (and hopefully temporary) life style.
My daily routine consists of waking up, going outside for a few minutes of fresh morning air, stretching in my living room, drinking coffee, working, taking a break for breakfast, working, doing class work, and then taking the rest of the day by ear. Your routine should reflect what’s important to you what pattern flows the most naturally for you.
2. Take mindful breaks
Taking breaks with your laptop still on your lap and your phone in your hand is not the same as getting up, setting your laptop down, and having a change of scenery for a moment. By doing this, you’ll actually allowing your mind to rest for a bit and refresh. Take a few breaks throughout your work time to ensure that you don’t get burnt out and that your mind is getting breaks.
3. Designate a work-space
Personally, I do not like working in the same space that I relax in. I find that when I start to work in places that are supposed to bring me relaxation, like my bed, I just end up getting more stressed when I’m trying to rest, and also not being as productive when I’m trying to work. It’s a vicious cycle. This Buffer article talks about why it’s not good to work in bed, and I’m a believer! Don’t get sucked into the working in bed rabbit hole.
4. Go Outside
Let’s be real - getting fresh air helps with everything. Personally, I find that getting even just a few minutes of outside time helps me to relax, refocus, and gives me a little burst of energy. I try and get outside for a few minutes during that afternoon lull somewhere between 2pm and 4pm so that burst of energy is put to good use.
5. Take Care of Your Body
How many times have you just wished you could get a few more minutes of sleep or could just stay home? Although everyone’s situations are different, this may be a great opportunity for you to really focus on your health and make sure you’re getting your full eight hours of sleep, drinking plenty of water, and fueling your body with good and nutritious foods. Make sure you’re taking some time for yourself even if you have a family at home to take care of.
